Glossary of terms and definitions related to GORE® Vents.
Airflow | Airflow describes the required time and volume of air your enclosure needs to exchange with the outside. This should be based on enclosure size, anticipated temperature ranges, altitude changes, cooling requirements, and allowable pressure differentials. Gore has developed computer modeling programs to help you determine the amount required. |

Chemical Resistance | ePTFE is chemically resistant ot virtually all industrial chemicals, including acids, alcohols, aledhydes, amines, bases, esters, ethers, halogenated hydrocarbons, hydrocarbons, ketones, polyalcohols and many more. For specific informations please open this document or contact our GORE representative. |
ePTFE | expanded Polytetrafluorethylene. Expanded polytetrafluorethylene, or ePTFE, was invented by W. L. Gore & Associates more than 30 years ago. Gore discovered that PFTE, a polymerized tetrafluoroethylene known for its chemical inertness, high thermal stability, low coefficient of friction and other distinctive properties, could be stretched rapidly to create strong micrporous material known as expanded PTFE, or ePTFE. Gore’s unique structure is ideally suited for venting applications because of its ability to repel liquids and other contaminates while allowing electronic and other enclosures to breathe through its microporous structure. In addition to Membrane Vents, Gore has incorporated its patented ePTFE technology into thousands of diverse products. |
Hydrophobic | Hydrophobic membranes repel fluids with a higher surface tension, e.g., water. |
Ingress Protection (IP) | Ingress Protection standards according to IEC (International Electronical Commission) |
NEMA | Enclosure protection standards according to the (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) |
Oleophobic | Our patented oleophobic, or oil-fearing” membranes, are capable of repelling low surface tension fluids such as oils, soaps, and alcohols. |
PTFE | Polytetrafluorethylene is used across a wide range of functions in many markets and is the building block of expanded PTFE or ePTFE. PTFE is one the most versatile thermoplastics known to the world. It is a polymerized tetrafluoroethylene known for its chemical inertness, high thermal stability, low coefficient of friction and other distinctive properties. Gore invented and continues to specialize in the research and manufacture of ePTFE, a microporous version of PTFE. Expanded PTFE, or ePTFE, offers a range of different and desirable properties which the company has utilized in thousands of diverse products. |
Pressure Equalization | GORE Protective Vents constantly equalize the difference in pressure between the inside of the enclosure and its immediate environment thus reducing the pressure on the seals at the same time. Maintaining equal pressures between the inside and outside of your enclosure may help extend product life. |
Water Protection Level | Please see IP or NEMA protection. |
WEP | Water-Entry-Pressure, i.e. the required pressure to push water through the GORE™ Membrane. |
