Overview

Today’s consumers want their household chemicals and cleaners to be powerful, efficient and built for specific tasks. What they don’t want is the unreliability and hassle of a leaky container.

This presents a challenge for household chemicals manufacturers: The more aggressive chemical formulations become, the more they need to breathe. Without the appropriate vents, containers of chemicals and cleaners — like bleach, detergent and stain removers — could collapse, bulge or leak when exposed to changes in altitude or temperature. Consumers could purchase leaky products, creating dissatisfaction and problems for brand image. Additionally, labels could be ruined. Pallets could collapse. Expenses for manufacturers could pile up.

GORE Packaging Vents minimize these risks. They provide superior airflow while preventing liquid from escaping containers, which allows formulations to breathe without the risk of leaks.

GORE PACKAGING VENTS PROTECT HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS & CHEMICALS

Our portfolio of vents for household cleaners packaging provide a range of solutions for all types of containers and caps.  From vented caps for bottles to plastic bottle cap seal liners, our vents are engineered to reliably protect the integrity of containers with highly-concentrated formulations or highly-active/aggressive ingredients:

  • Bleaches and bleach formulations
  • Oxygenated formulations
  • Calcium- or scale-removers

Two ways GORE Packaging Vents protect package integrity

Why Vent?

VENTING ENABLES SUCCESSFUL LEAK-TEST PROCEDURES FOR PLASTIC BOTTLES

Vented cap liners and vented packaging caps protect chemical formulations and their containers all along the supply chain, because they:

  • Reliably balance the pressure differences that can cause containers to deform, leak or even burst.
  • Prevent leaks that can damage packaging, labeling, and the brand’s reputation.
  • Minimize the likelihood of costly returns, or time-consuming spills or clean-ups, due to leaky packaging.

GORE® Packaging Vents reliably protect all types of household chemical packaging from the manufacturing line to the end-user’s household. They continuously equalize pressures within the container, minimizing the risk of leaks and maintaining the integrity of containers and their contents.

GORE VENTS SOLVE THREE CONTAINER PROBLEMS BEFORE TROUBLE OCCURS

All three problems create pressure differences between the container’s interior and exterior. Unless those differences are balanced out, they will escalate until the container deforms, or leaks, or even bursts.

Because GORE Packaging Vents continuously balance interior and exterior pressures, they solve all three types of packaging problems for household cleaners and household chemicals:

Problem 1: Active Ingredients that Release or Consume Gases

Unvented container bloating due to off-gassing and collapsing due to oxygen scavenging.

Without venting, pressure build-ups can cause a container to bloat, leak or burst, while under-pressures can cause container collapse.

Active ingredients in chemical packaging applications can off-gas (release gases within the container), or they can scavenge (consume) free oxygen within the container.

  • Off-gassing will build up pressure within the container.
  • Oxygen scavenging will create under-pressure within the container

Problem 2: Changes in the External Environment

Animation of an unvented container deformed by increasing or decreasing temperatures or altitudes.

Sudden or extreme changes in the external environment will accelerate the deformation.

During distribution or storage, industrial chemical or cleaner packaging is exposed to changes in the external environment. These changes (increasing or decreasing temperatures or altitudes) create pressure imbalances that can cause unvented or inadequately-vented containers to bloat or collapse.

Problem 3: Containers Designed to Dispense Liquids

animation of an unvented dispenser container deformed by under-pressure.

Without venting that continuously re-balances the internal and external pressures, the dispensing container may collapse.

Unless it is properly vented, industrial fluid packaging that provides a dispensing function is always vulnerable to collapse. That’s because the act of dispensing automatically creates an under-pressure within the container, and that under-pressure recurs with each use.

Applications

GORE VENTING SOLUTIONS FOR HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS

For today’s more highly-concentrated household chemical formulations, venting is increasingly required.  Retail environments offer customers plenty of choices, so they don’t hesitate to reject deformed, leaky or label-damaged packages. Reliable venting is the key to successful packaging and satisfied customers.

GORE® Packaging Vents can prevent the kind of label or container damage that makes shoppers reject a household cleaner instead of buying it.

Applications that typically vent for pressure equalization:

  • Carpet cleaners
  • Laundry stain removers
  • Pipe clog removers
  • Surface cleaners containing bleach and chlorine
  • Anti-calc-cleaners
  • Single-dose packaging for household cleaners

Why Gore?

We’re the preferred partner for leading household chemical suppliers and cap and container manufacturers.  They know they can count on us for:

GROUNDBREAKING MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY
  • We continue to develop new and proprietary membrane technologies, even as we evolve and improve existing ones.
  • Our membrane structures and properties can also be customized for specific customer needs or applications.
  • We design and manufacture every vent we sell, and — unlike competitors — also every membrane that goes into them.
  • Customers worldwide rely on our robust global supply chain for ready access to the products and support resources they need.
The roll-off optimized GORE Membrane enables rapid airflow recovery after contact with high-viscosity or low surface-tension household chemicals.
