The plant has an oversized collector, of which only half is used at a time. Half of the collector remains in reserve, to be used when the other half is shutdown for metal repairs. A very corrosive sulphuric-acid fume environment was causing very short bag life. Also, very tight emission levels had to be met.

GORE membrane/GORE fabric filter bags were installed in the lead reverberatory collector.

After the GORE membrane/GORE fabric filter bags were installed, bag life increased from one year to five years. Production downtime caused by the need to replace bags prematurely was virtually eliminated. Bag life is now comparable with the maintenance life of the collector metal. Emission levels have met and exceeded agency requirements.
