Mercury and SO2 control system case study

Coal-fired power provider Eins Energie, based in Chemnitz (Germany), has been supplying around 400,000 household and commercial customers in Chemnitz and the surrounding area with electricity and district heating since 1961. This case study illustrates how Gore helped Eins Energie to reduce mercury emissions to consistently below the applicable limit of 7 μg/m³.

Sewage sludge, municipal solid waste, and hazardous waste incinerators around the world are under continual regulatory pressure to reduce emissions of various pollutants. The GORE Mercury and SO₂ Control System is a unique, scalable, low-cost fixed catalyst and sorbent system for removing gas phase SO₂ and mercury from incineration flue gas.

A Simple and Effective Way to Comply With Regulatory Requirements

The GORE Mercury Control System (GMCS) is a unique fixed sorbent system for capturing elemental and oxidized gas phase mercury from industrial flue gas. The system is based on discrete stackable modules that are installed downstream of a particulate collection system.

The Asheville, NC Metropolitan Sewerage District treatment plant has upgraded its Incineration system with the GORE Mercury Control System to ensure full compliance with EPA mercury emissions standards.  After a comparative analysis, Gore’s system was determined to be simple, efficient, and the most cost effective solution, saving the plant $5M-plus along with helping to meet new stringent emissions standards.
