Summary

Coal-fired Foster Wheeler boiler with 28 burners. In the past, a plastic extruded-rope material was applied on either side of a stainless steel braided ring to seal the burner fronts. The rope material was hard to work with, and it also had a limited shelf life. Then the plastic-coated rope was replaced on a few burners with GORE-TEX joint sealant.

Results

The GORE™ joint sealant was much easier to use, and it also required less cleanup time. After six months there had been no leaks or any other problems. Plant managers plan to use GORE™ joint sealant on all of the burners, anticipating savings of 40-50 worker-hours.
