Municipal Waste Incinerator – West Germany

Application

Municipal Waste Incinerator – West Germany. Baghouse off top feed moving grate boiler; on-line pulse jet cleaning (680 bags); 4 separate boiler lines; waste loading of 7.8 tons/hr (solid); 47,200 lbs/hr steam load. Dust loading 4 gr/cf at 48,600 acfm at 338ºF. The gas cleaning consists of adsorption tower which employs CA(OH)2 at a maximum rate of 790 gal/hr.

Optimization Potential

Conventional woven fiberglass filter media installed in lines 2-4. Poor cake release lending to increased pulse frequency has caused numerous bag failures and increased compressed air usage. These problems have occurred in as little as 3,000 operating hours.

Solution

GORE® membrane/Teflon® B fiberglass fabric filter bags installed in line 1 have outperformed all other filter media to date. Due to the outstanding performance of line 1, lines 3 & 4 have been retrofitted with GORE® membrane/Teflon® B fiberglass fabric filter bags.

Results

Emission measurements in February 1987 were 0.0004 gr/cf for line 1. The outlet rate was 2.5 times less than any other lines. (Measurements were performed after 9,200 operating hours/17 months.) Cost savings in compressed air usage have been substantial. GORE® membrane filter bags are pulsed at 57 psig every 15-30 minutes (load conditioned) as compared to every 5 seconds for lines 2-4. Pulse cleaning is by demand. The maximum DP for line 1 is 6.3-7.0" w.g.
