Application

Primary smelting of FESI products. Flakt pulse-jet cleaned collector (480 bags)

Optimization Potential

Poor evacuation in working area around the furnace. Conventional NOMEX® felt bags were operating fairly well for a few months but as pressure dropped increased, flow was restricted.

Solution

Installed a set of GORE® membrane/fiberglass fabric filter bags to reduce plugging in order to create a clean working environment and also to extend baglife.

Results

After 1 year of operation the GORE®membrane filter bags are still evacuating the working area completely and at a controlled pressured drop of approximately 200 mm w.g. (At installation and start-up the customer removed the inlet duct construction that we placed in the middle of the collector and over its entire length. This led to an inlet velocity of 44 m/s and a hurricane situation among the filter bags: some were dropping down and others were damaged from abrasion. Gore supervised with drawings of a new inlet design that reduced the inlet velocity of 3 m/s and solved the problem. We also found leakages between a screw construction that caused jetstreams that made holes in the bags. Also, that is solved and now we have a very happy customer. They have another 2,000 bags to go for.
