Electric-arc furnace baghouse.

Optimization Potential

The plant had been pressured by state and local air-quality agencies to improve furnace ventilation to better evacuate this smoky melt shop. High temperatures and sparks from the furnace were causing premature failure of the NOMEX® filter bags. A high-pressure differential in the baghouse was limiting overall system airflow.

Solution

Installed GORE® membrane/woven fiberglass fabric filter bags into the electric-arc furnace baghouse.

Results

Thermal degradation of filter bags has been eliminated. The pressure differential across the baghouse was decreased by two inches. A 30 percent increase in airflow was measured through the system. This increase in airflow has virtually eliminated the smoky conditions in the melt shop. Baghouse emissions are one-tenth permitted levels.
