Steel – Electric Arc Furnace – 70-ton EAF
Application
Steel electric-arc furnace 70-ton EAF evacuated by two reverse-air baghouses.
Optimization Potential
Customer needed to increase airflow to evacuate furnace properly and eliminate shop fume. Each baghouse was operating at an air-to-cloth ratio of approximately 2/1 (64 m/min) and a differential pressure of 11" w.g. (280 mm).
Solution
Each baghouse has four compartments, with 60 filter bags per compartment. Gore recommended installation of GORE® membrane filter bags in only one of the baghouses and with only 28 bags per compartment, thus raising the air-to-cloth ratio to 4.5/1.0 (1.36 m/min). The second baghouse was left running as before.
Results
Start-up was successful, with sufficient draft to evacuate the furnace. The majority of this draft was from the GORE® membrane-filter-bag-outfitted baghouse, and the operational differential pressure was 5.2" w.g. (133 mm). The start-up also used a precoat to protect the GORE® membrane from potentially damaging hydrocarbons.
