Application

Purification on an electric-arc furnace (60T). 532 filter bags. Filtration area: 12,535 ft (1,165 m). Cleaning by mechanical shaking and counter current rinse air.

Optimization Potential

Substantial plugging of the filter bags, resulting in a flow deficiency and rapid plugging of the flue, and resulting very high maintenance and labor costs. Bags were being cleaned every six months. Emissions due to mechanical failure of the filter bags. Workshops badly polluted.

Solution

Installed GORE® membrane filter bags.

Results

To date, 7.5 years life for the GORE® membrane filter bags (filter bags are being replaced due to an increase in operating temperature: GORE® membrane/polyester felt filter bags replaced by GORE® membrane/fiberglass filter bags). This replacement was completed during the fourth quarter of 1989. The mechanical shaking was eliminated; therefore, there has been no more mechanical wear or detachment of the filter bags. Emissions have been eliminated. Flow rate over time has been steady and constant. Manpower and maintenance costs have been greatly reduced.
