Steel Scrap Melting Electric Arc Furnace
Application
Steel scrap-melting, electric-arc furnace, producing carbon and low-alloy steels. A Holter high-pressure, pulse-jet style baghouse (high pressure, low volume pulsing); 6,912 bags; 20,408m of filter area. Filtering velocity of 1.47 m/min. on-line for a total air-flow requirement of 1,840,000 m/hr; a baghouse operating temperature of approximately 105°C, from a combined canopy and fourth hole evacuation system.
Optimization Potential
A new system was installed, the first to be installed and operated with a dioxin emission regulation of 0.1 nanograms per cubic meter. This translates to a total dust emission requirement of 1 mg/m.
Solution
The company installed 6,912 GORE-TEX® membrane/polyester felt filter bags.
Results
System operation began in November 1995. After initial dust evacuation system problems, the system has settled into smooth operation with low pressure drops (less than 175 mm w.g.). The emission requirements have been met, even with the system start-up problems. Total cleaning-system requirements are less than 17.5 m/min. Three years of usable life is expected from the bags.
