GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread FAQs

What is GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread?
GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread is manufactured from 100 percent expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), the chemical name for Teflon® from DuPont. Expanded PTFE is two to three times stronger than conventional PTFE.

What is GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread ORIGINAL STYLE?
GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread ORIGINAL STYLE is Gore’s first generation of outdoor sewing thread. The ORIGINAL STYLE sewing thread is un-lubricated, with an elongation or stretch of five to seven percent. Some customers prefer un-lubricated thread for their particular applications.

What is GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread TR STYLE?
GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread TR STYLE is our second generation of outdoor sewing thread, engineered for high-speed sewing applications such as awning production. The patented TR STYLE sewing thread has an elongation or stretch of approximately 17 percent, aiding high-speed sewing. The TR STYLE is lubricated in all but the largest size.

What colors are available with GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread?
Our TR STYLE sewing thread is available in a very popular universal “clear” thread that virtually disappears in lightly shaded fabrics. Also, eleven non-fading vibrant colors are available to match many fabric designs. Our ORIGINAL STYLE thread is available in a natural unpigmented white and a pigmented black thread.

What is the benefit to my customer from GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread?
Ask your customers if they have ever had to bring their canvas in for restitching. If so, explain that when their seams are sewn with GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread, they are covered under warranty and there will be no future expenses for restitching. Explain how long a thread typically lasts in your area and the likelihood that their canvas will eventually need to be repaired. Seam strength is directly related to loop strength -the strength of two threads looped together as in a lockstitch. In laboratory testing, GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread retains a relative loop strength of more than 90% of its tensile strength giving greater seam strength. Conventional core-spun, spun, or continuous threads made of polyester or polyamide only retain a relative loop strength of 60-70 percent of their tensile strength. In some instances, GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread has a slightly lower initial breaking strength than conventional polyester or cotton/polyester threads. However, while polyester and cotton/polyester threads break down due to sunlight, weathering, and chemicals, GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread does not lose its strength. Combining superior loop strength and superior weather resistance makes GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread the choice for outdoor thread.
