What is D3 - Deter, Delay, Detect?
GORE™ Tamper Respondent Technology has been known by its nickname “D3”, standing for its purpose to "Deter, Delay, Detect" physical hackers. Each of the three aspects of the technology is equally important.
Deter, Delay, Detect
Deter
The most effective physical anti-tamper technology should be sufficiently difficult to analyze that the attacker is thwarted from mounting an educated attack. The fine conductive ink tracks of a GORE™ Tamper Respondent Sensor are never visible to optical inspection. They form a complex pattern and are simply transparent to X-ray analysis, leaving the attacker with little clue about where to begin.
Delay
If the attacker is determined to proceed, the most effective protection system would be sufficiently tedious to work around, taking more time to access than the information is worth. The non-metallic and highly resistive tracks of a GORE™ Tamper Respondent Sensor are difficult to bridge, even if the attacker could theoretically gain direct access to the sensor. With multi-layer sensors, gaining entry will be a very challenging task.
Detect
If the attacker continues to proceed, there should be a high probability that the efforts will be detected. The tracks of a GORE™ Tamper Respondent Sensor are designed to be robust yet frangible. They are robust in their ability to be folded and installed. Yet they are easily disrupted in an actual penetration attack. Such disruption results in a quick, significant, and permanent change in the sensor output.
