New, ultra-thin, high-strength membranes take up less space in the cell, allowing batteries that are smaller and lighter, or that extend battery life without increasing size or weight. The high strength of these membranes allow them to withstand extreme manufacturing stresses and resist splitting if the battery swells due to absorbed moisture or dimensional change.
